Minnesota Voyageur 50 Mile – Directions to Race Start / Finish (Carlton High School – Carlton, MN)

From the South:

  • Take I-35 North.
  • Take exit 235 for MN-210 toward Cromwell/Carlton.
  • Turn right at MN-210 E/State Hwy 61 and continue to follow MN-210 E 2.4 miles into Carlton.
  • Turn left at 3rd St.
  • Take the 1st right onto Walnut Ave.

From the North:

  • Take I-35 South.
  • Take exit 239 for Cloquet / Scanlon.
  • Turn left at MN-45 toward Carlton for 2.4 miles.
  • Turn left at Walnut Ave.
Both of these sets of directions bring you in on Walnut Ave., which intersects with 4th St., the final sprint to the finish for our runners. Please use caution. Other streets are available for approaching the school as well, e.g. 5th St. and 6th St. – which connect to School Ave., good options for avoiding runners and potential congestion near the finish line. Minnesota Voyageur 50 Mile – Directions to Packet Pickup (Four Seasons Athletic Complex – Carlton, MN)
– For Friday night packet pickup, also in Carlton, but down the road a bit from the start / finish.

From the South:

  • Take I-35 North.
  • Take exit 235 for MN-210 toward Cromwell/Carlton.
  • Turn right at MN-210 E/State Hwy 61 and continue to follow MN-210 E 2.4 miles into Carlton.
  • The Four Seasons Complex will be on the left as you enter Carlton on MN-210. However, this street will be closed due to Carlton Daze festivities.
  • Turn right at the detour, then first left and park on North Ave. Walk on walk over (visual here).

From the North:

  • Take I-35 South.
  • Take exit 239 for Cloquet / Scanlon.
  • Turn left at MN-45 toward Carlton for 2.4 miles, arriving at the intersection with MN-210.
  • The Four Seasons Complex is on MN-210. However, this street will be closed due to Carlton Daze festivities.
  • Continue one more block past MN-210 to North Ave.
  • Turn right and go approximately 3 blocks. The complex will be visible on the right, near the water tower. Park on North Ave. Walk on walk over (visual here).

Course Guide for Spectators and Crew

1Take Hwy 210 (Chesnut Ave.) east out of Carlton. Road curves right in Thomson and heads into Jay Cooke State Park. Turn into the Park Headquarters lot. AS1 (Jay Cooke) is toward the river, behind the Park Headquarters buildings.

Day parking stickers should be purchased here. A number of our aid stations are inside park boundaries, and Jay Cooke State Park officials have been very cooperative in cutting trail and providing us access for our race — please support them!
2Exit the Park Headquarters lot, turning east (right) down Hwy 210. Turn left on (gravel) Jay Cooke Rd. AS2 (Forbay) is on the right side of the road in the pines.

Note: Runners may present crossing Jay Cooke Rd. near the aid station. Be Careful!
3Continue (north) on Jay Cooke Rd. At the T-intersection with E. Palkie Rd., turn right. In about a mile the road takes a bend left, becoming Jay Cooke Rd. The gravel road coming off the right-hand side of the bend is a continuation of E. Palkie Rd. Take this gravel road, down to a small dirt parking lot on the right. Hike in across the Munger Trail, down the right fork of the Oak Trail. AS3 (Peterson's) is a short distance in, nestled in the woods on the left.
4There is no crew access to AS4 (Grand Portage) this year due to road closure and construction! Please respect this request, as it can have bearing on gaining access in the future.
5From AS3, return out the gravel road to Jay Cooke Rd., turning right (north). Follow this to old Hwy 61. Turn right. At I-35, head north to the next exit, Midway Rd. Go right at the bottom of the exit. The road becomes Becks Rd., continue straight. On the right side, you will see AS7 (Becks Rd.). Park here and head down the dirt / gravel trail past the aid station (old Mission Creek Rd.). AS5 (Seven Bridges) is just down the hill, underneath the bridge that goes over the Munger Trail.

Note: Runners will be crossing Becks Rd. here. Be Careful! Also, please park well over on the shoulder, off the road.
6Continue down Becks Rd. (south). At Hwy 23 (Commonwealth Ave.), turn right, heading through Gary / New Duluth. Continue on to Fond du Lac. Turn right on 131st Street. Go to end, through park gate and follow the narrow dirt road to AS6 (Fond du Lac).

Parking is tight here, hiking in from the dirt lot near the gate can save congestion.
7Go back out 131st Street, taking a left at Hwy 23 and head back toward Becks Rd. Take a left on Becks Rd., following it back up to AS7 (Becks Rd.) on the left hand side.

Note: Runners will be crossing Becks Rd. here. Be Careful! Also, please park well over on the shoulder, off the road.
8Continue back up Becks Rd. north to I-35. Head north on I-35. Take the exit for Boundary Ave., turning right at the top of the ramp. Follow the frontage road around, and take a left on Skyline Parkway at the 3-way stop. Follow Skyline Parkway to AS8 (Skyline) near Magney-Snively Park.

Note: Runners may present along Skyline Parkway. Be Careful!
9Return back out Skyline Parkway to the Boundary Ave. interchange with I-35. Take I-35 north. Take the Cody Street exit. Take a right on 59th. Ave. W., following it to Grand Ave. Turn right onto Grand Ave. (Hwy 23).

Take a right onto 71st Ave. W., veer slight left onto Fremont St., go to the Lake Superior Zoo parking lot. Please park in the gravel lot on the right (not on the paved portion). Walk across the park, around the corner of the chain link fence to AS9, the turn-around.
Turn around and back track to finish line.
